What defines a Battle Royale game? Well, thanks to H1Z1 and PUBG, there are two main elements needed to define the genre: scavenging/looting systems and last-man-standing gameplay.
Go back over 20 years, however, and we can trace proto-Battle Royale roots to a first party Nintendo title with mixed reviews: Kirby Air Ride, the cult-classic GameCube game from 2003. This is City Trial. This is one of the first Battle Royale games.
