Canelo Alvarez Happy With Ryan Garcia’s Victory Over Devin Haney

Canelo Alvarez says he’s pleased to see his former gym-mate Ryan Garcia defeat WBC light welterweight champion Devin Haney last month on April 20th.

Alvarez wasn’t surprised that Ryan (25-1, 20 KOs) defeated Haney (31-1, 15 KOs). He showed the talent many believed he had when he was training at his gym with coach Eddy Reynoso.

In 2022, moved on and was briefly with trainer Joe Goosen before hooking up with current coach Derrick James.

“Nothing surprise me. I think Ryan has a lot of talent, and I’m happy for him,” said Canelo Alvarez to the media when asked about his reaction to Ryan Garcia defeating Devin Haney on April 20th.

“I see that fight and I was so happy. Nervous a little bit, but I was so happy for him.”

It would have been interesting to see how far advanced Kingry would be now if he’d stuck with Reynoso because he was fighting well when he worked with him. However, with all the stars in that gym, it might have been difficult for Ryan to get the kind of one-on-one training that he does now with Derrick James.

What’s Next for Ryan Garcia?

Ryan still hasn’t said who he plans on fighting next. Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Roberto Diaz said a fight between Ryan and WBO light welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez would be a big one. It could happen at a catchweight of 144 or at 147.

The timing of a fight against Teofimo isn’t good, considering he’s coming off a controversial win over Jamaine Ortiz. Ryan would have nothing to gain by fighting Teofimo because he was soundly beaten by Ortiz.

A bigger fight for Ryan would be against Errol Spence but that would be more dangerous because he’s bigger and stronger than anyone Kingry has faced.

Devin Haney’s Uncertain Future

Haney’s career is not looking good. If Haney moves up to 147 or 154, his lack of power will limit his success, and he won’t be able to hand-pick fighters in those weight classes as he did initially when moving up to 140.

The way Haney lost the fight paints a grim picture for him no matter where he goes. Due to his size, he can’t stay at 140 much longer, but without improvements in his punching power, his future is bleak. Even the weakest links among the champions at 147 and 154 would be a nightmare for Haney.
