Earlier this week, Xbox announced a fresh showcase for Sunday, June 9th, whilst also teasing a mysterious ‘REDACTED’ direct immediately after. The image for the event includes the famous orange color scheme often seen in Call of Duty’s Black Ops series, and with Activision now under the Microsoft umbrella, fans are certain that this mysterious event is related to this year’s Call of Duty game.
Activision hasn’t outright confirmed the existence of a new Call of Duty game for 2024, but you’ve got a better chance of winning the lottery than you have of Activision missing out on those sweet, sweet annual Call of Duty sales.
Warzone’s Season 3 Reloaded Update Reintroduces A Meta That Hasn’t Been Seen Since 2009
Season 3 Reloaded sees the return of a fan-favorite weapon, and it’s already making its mark in Warzone.
Late last year, a report from Windows Central’s Jez Corden claimed that Call of Duty’s 2024 release would be set within the Black Ops universe. Corden stated that the title was being referred to as Black Ops 6 internally, but given that the series recently dropped the numerated name when it released Black Ops Cold War, it was speculated that this year’s Call of Duty would be titled Black Ops: Gulf War, given that the title is reportedly set during the Gulf War.
Shortly after Xbox teased the potential Black Ops direct showcase, fans instantly assumed that the text underneath the blacked-out box read ‘BLACK OPS V’ but now a new leak has some people thinking that this may just be titled Black Ops VI.
For those confused, Black Ops Cold War was released in 2020 and was the fifth entry in the subseries. This was the first Black Ops game to not include a number in its title, which means nobody really knows if this was supposed to be Black Ops V or a spin-off. While 2024 will likely see the release of a sixth Black Ops game, it’s possible that it will be titled Black Ops V. Confusing, I know.
Black Ops 5? Black Ops 6? Does It Really Matter?
While the instant assumption was that this year’s Call of Duty would be titled ‘Black Ops V’, a new leak from X (formerly Twitter) user Reality unearthed a weapon blueprint that will be a reward for an upcoming Call of Duty 2024 reveal event. The weapon is for the 9MM Daemon Handgun, but is strikingly similar to the M1911 Pistol seen in the original Black Ops.
When used with the Akimbo attachment, the pistol was often referred to as ‘Mustang and Sally’. And on the side of this leaked blueprint is the name ‘Sally’ followed by 6 tallies, which has led many to believe that this is alluding to the next Black Ops game being titled ‘Black Ops VI’.
It’s unclear whether or not Treyarch intended for Cold War to be a spin-off when they strayed from the numerated title, which would mean they could quite easily resume the series with Black Ops V, despite it being the sixth entry in the series. But no matter which way you look at it, this is Black Ops 6, so a teaser with 6 tallies shouldn’t exactly be surprising. It also doesn’t mean that Treyarch is titling the next game Black Ops VI.
Fans on X are making their stance on the matter clear though. Content creator Lex mocked the potential title with a Family Guy meme, while others noted that the Black Ops series uses tallies and not Roman numerals, hence why Black Ops 4 was ‘Black Ops IIII’ and not ‘Black Ops IV’.
While some fans believe Cold War is “its own thing” and not a direct sequel, others believe that Cold War is Black Ops 5, whether we like it or not. Either way, we’ve got another month to go until we find out who’s right and who’s wrong.
