At Pinehurst, post-round libations get a crafty upgrade

There’s one thing we golfers can agree on: Nothing tastes better than a post-round pint.

That’s especially true at Pinehurst, where, after playing one of Pinehurst Resort’s 10 courses — including the famous No. 2, host of this week’s U.S. Open — guests and locals alike can mosey on over to the Pinehurst Brewing Company, a short walk from Pinehurst Resort, where you’ll find 14 craft beers on tap with names like Pineapple Caddie Quencher, Sweet Carolina Haze and Frost Covered Magnolias.

Eleven of the 14 offerings rotate on a seasonal basis, but two staples, the 1895 Lager (an American-style lager) and Pivoted (a New England–style IPA), are mainstays on tap throughout the year. This summer, Lime Wheel, a popular Mexican-style lager, will return to the lineup. The final tap spot is dedicated to a cider collaboration with North Carolina–based Flat Rock Cider Company.

Pinehurst Brewing Co., which celebrates its sixth anniversary this year, was an immediate hit upon opening. It’s not only the busiest restaurant at Pinehurst Resort but also among the busiest in the whole county. On weekends, it’s not uncommon to have to wait an hour or more for a table, says operations manager Laura Bailey.

“You can be yourself,” Bailey says of Pinehurst Brewing Co.’s appeal. “It’s loud. There’s live music, cornhole outside. The beer garden’s full. It’s casual and fun.”

Pinehurst Brewing Co.’s allure begins with its atmosphere. The building itself is a renovated steam plant that dates back to 1895. Much of the original structure was preserved, including the brick corbels on the exterior.

Upon arrival, you can elect to sit at a table or the expansive bar. Then it’s time to pick some apps. Bailey recommends the smoked chicken wings, which are tossed in Cheerwine barbecue or hot sauce.

“We’re famous for those in town here,” she says.

Choosing your entrée may prove a little tougher. In addition to barbecue pork, beef brisket, ribs and chicken from a smokehouse on site, Pinehurst Brewing Co.’s extensive menu also offers a selection of sandwiches, burgers, salads and pizza.

And to wash it all down? Now that’s a fun decision. Restaurant staff can help guide you to a selection you’ll love, or you can opt for a tasting flight of several varieties. There’s really only one requirement to enjoy your Pinehurst Brewing Co. experience: Be open to trying something new.

“Hats off to the brew team,” says Bailey. “Craft breweries and craft beers are tough to really like and enjoy sometimes. But our team tries to make something for everybody. And they leave loving it.”
