Elden Ring is the dark fantasy Soulslike on every gamer’s radar right now, celebrating the release of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. Not only is there DLC content to sweat over, but the base game also received a healthy patch recently that has allowed The Tarnished to summon their loyal Torrent steed in battle, but the feature is dividing fans.
In addition to summoning the spectral steed during one of Elden Ring’s most prolific boss battles, the patch also included added support for the DLC, five new hairstyles, an added “Map Functions Menu”, and new Summoning Pool features. Summoning Torrent During The Elden Beast Battle Is Two Years Too Late
One of the more eye-widening features added to the Elden Ring base game within the recent patch was the option to summon Torrent during the final boss fight of the game. The patch notes confirmed “Added new feature to summon spectral steed during the Elden Beast boss battle” and this addition has both elated the fandom and frustrated many.
After content creators began sharing their time with the Elden Beast while riding circles around the boss on their trusty steed, fans wasted no time sharing their annoyance. One onlooker simply said the feature was “2 years too late…this should’ve been implemented the 2nd week of the game being released at the latest lmao.”
Other fans shared their disappointment that this feature was added too late in the game’s longevity, saying “I literally just beat the game 2 days ago and now they add this” – emphasized by the crying emoji. In the same vein, another completionist said “I literally JUST did the fight after the patch last night and didn’t realize this. Gotta replay the whole game now.”
Fans Think Torrent Makes The Elden Beast Battle Too Easy
In addition to sentiments acknowledging this feature arrived too late in Elden Ring’s life span, others focused on how the steed’s involvement lowered the difficulty level of the final boss battle. Purists were quick to say the combat was now too easy with Torrent involved, but others were happy The Tarnished could finish the game alongside the companion.
“Easy mode lol and people say there’s no difficulty slider in this game. This plus mage build = very easy mode” said one Souls player and another simply said “Easy mode for the kids.” A more constructive dose of feedback went “Makes it way easier. Hopefully, they buffed him as well to balance it out.”
The other side of the fandom was much more supportive of the feature and were thankful they didn’t have to chase the Elden Beast constantly, as the boss would continuously run away. One fan thought it was “a nice finale with your trusty steed” and another highlighted “That might be a huge boss nerf but on the other hand, probably way more fun. I can barely see what’s going on during that fight in close combat.”
FromSoftware may have delivered this helping hand a little too late, but gamers who struggle with the punishing Soulslike combat are grateful.
