In the final installment of HBO’s “Hard Knocks: An Offseason with the New York Giants,” we got a glimpse of the Giants’ 2024 draft board, complete with their color codes for each player.
Mind you, it wasn’t their in-house draft board or how they had the players ranked but rather, a color-coded chart that showed the results of the 2024 NFL draft with their color overlay for each player.
What do those color codes represent? Here’s a quick key.
Let’s take a look at how close they had their 2024 draft class color-coded.
We know the Giants had no issues with Malik Nabers. In fact, after striking out on possible deals for a quarterback, he was their main target. He just might be the best player in the draft class and his many wares have been on display daily at training camp.
The Giants lost Julian Love and Xavier McKinney in free agency in consecutive offseasons and needed a leader out in the secondary. Tyler Nubin fits that bill. The blue coding means he’s an ‘A+ character’ guy, but we’ve yet to see that here in training camp as Nubin has been sidelined with a calf issue.
The Giants had Dru Phillips pegged correctly with a ‘gray’ code, which connotes position flexibility. They are trying Phillips at slot corner but he is proving that he can play just about any position in the secondary.
The Giants clearly liked what they saw from Theo Johnson during the pre-draft process but like others at the position, he was left in the “white” code. The only tight end they did have coded was Brock Bowers (blue), who was selected 13th overall by Las Vegas.
Johnson began camp on PUP with a hip flexor but is now practicing and has made several impressive plays thus far.
Tyrone Tracy was held in high regard by the Giants but they knew he would be a Day 3 pick and likely had him grouped in with s slew of other backs in the same talent group.
But Tracy is proving to be more versatile and valuable than many had originally thought. He could be in for considerable playing time on both offense and special teams this season.
Darius Muasau was picked for his character as well as his versatility and production. The Giants love those ‘team-first’ types and Muasau is an unselfish player who will do what is asked of him to win football games.
