In August 2020, Jon Jones announced that he was vacating the UFC light heavyweight title with the intentions of moving up to the heavyweight division. Three years after his last fight in the 205-pound weight class, Jones returned to the octagon to fight Ciryl Gane for the vacant heavyweight championship at UFC 285.
There was uncertainty about how Jones would look at heavyweight and how much of a factor would three years away from competition play in the fight. 124 seconds into the fight, Jones defeated Gane via guillotine choke and added a two-division champion to his Hall of Fame resume. Jones takes on former two-time titleholder Stipe Miocic in the UFC 309 main event on Nov. 16 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. It’ll be Jones’ first heavyweight title defense and could be his final fight. The two were previously expected to headline UFC 295 last November, but Jones withdrew due to a pectoral muscle injury.
