Tibia was one of the first MMORPGs to be released into the wild, and well over 20 years later, it’s still active. Developer CipSoft has quietly been crafting a new project, however, and the team recently announced its fresh endeavor to be the zombie-based MMO Persist Online through an exciting announcement trailer.
The videogames catalog already has a healthy list of fantasy MMOs to escape into, including Runescape, EverQuest, and the ever-growing Final Fantasy 14 – which is preparing to unleash its Dawntrail expansion with director Yoshi-P at the helm, continuing his legacy to honor the franchise in each wave.

Persist Online Offers A Deep Dive Into The Zombie Apocalypse
In an announcement posted on the developer’s website, CipSoft unveiled a first look at Persist Online, framing the release as a huge milestone for the studio after laying dormant since Tibia’s late 90s release. Noting that the devs were considered “genre pioneers” for producing one of the first games of its kind, fans should be excited to see what CipSoft has been cooking for the modern generation.
The post was accompanied by an announcement trailer for Persist Online, comprising of pre-alpha footage encouraging players to “Join Our Community at Junction Stronghold”. The first look gave interested parties a taste of the “deadly sandbox with zombies” set to an adrenaline-fueled score, emphasizing the harrowing fight against the undead and other survivors.
Comparing gameplay to Tibia’s premise, the studio confirmed that “instead of casting spells on orcs, players in Persist Online must resist zombies using firearms and melee weapons”. In “true old-school MMORPG” fashion, the new sandbox will invite “hundreds of players together on one server with the greatest possible freedom”, which is exactly the kind of promise you want to hear from a title of this ilk. With no classes to choose from, players can delve into developing their character into a preferred play style.
However, zombies will not be the only threat in this brand-new expanse, as players also have the opportunity to steal loot from bunkers in addition to becoming your ally against the walking dead and “mutated bosses” with no instancing to keep your friends close. Guns and baseball bats will replace the mages and spells accumulated in Tibia, and the world is complete with a day and night cycle.
The game’s lead product manager, Benjamin Zuckerer, reiterated the importance of a strong community within an MMO, saying the appeal of this genre “lies in the diverse interaction possibilities among players and the unpredictable stories that emerge from them”.
Persist Online currently has no release date, but the MMORPG will be available for Windows, macOS, and Linux via Steam and will initially be playable through Early Access.
