Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko has a tough decision ahead of him.
Starter Connor Weigman went down against LSU this past weekend which paved the way for his backup, freshman Marcel Reed, to make a name for himself in a big way.
When Reed came into the game with 8:10 to go in the third quarter, Texas A&M was on the ropes, down 17-7. Thanks to an interception, Reed’s first snap came on 1st-and-goal from the LSU 8-yard line. He ran that in for a touchdown.
Ultimately, Reed led the Aggie to five-straight scoring drives, looking like the most dynamic player on the field and delivered a 38-23 win.
Weigman could go this upcoming weekend against South Carolina, but one very influential voice in the Texas A&M sphere, former Heisman Trophy-winner Johnny Manziel, believes Reed should be the starter.
“I think it would be really hard right now to go away from Marcel Reed and the energy and vibe that he brought to that team on Saturday,” Manziel said, via The Action Network. “Right now, I would anticipate on Saturday Marcel Reed being the guy. But it definitely is nice having the option to be able to go back and forth.”
If “Johnny Football” wants Reed to be the starter, you best bet the rest of Aggie nation is going to be clamoring for the freshman as well. As far as Elko is concerned, tough, he doesn’t appear to be ready to make a commitment one way or the other.
“Yeah, I think the possibility is there for a lot of things,” Elko told the media on Monday (h/t On3). “I think we’re going to look at this week, figure out what we think the right thing is for us, what we think gives us the best chance to win moving forward. It’s probably too early in our minds to make that decision. Even if we did, we probably wouldn’t tell you right now anyway.”
Elko may be holding his cards close to the vest, but it’s hard to deny that Reed gave his offense a dynamic look that hasn’t been seen in a while … potentially since “Johnny Football” himself.
