OAKLAND — Ryan McMahon, the most dependable of the Rockies, delivered a two-run homer in the 12th inning to put a happy end to an evening of offensive struggle and end a four-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over the Athletics at the Coliseum on Wednesday.
The Rockies had gone 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position before McMahon pulled the sixth pitch of his left-on-left at-bat against Kyle Muller over the right-field wall for his ninth homer of the season. The swing extended McMahon’s home run streak to three straight games, and he has four in his last seven contests.
Drama ensued when Seth Brown singled to open the bottom of the 12th against reliever Nick Mears. However, Mears forced Zack Gelof into a grounder to McMahon to bring in a run but touch off a rally-killing double play. Mears walked Tyler Nevin and Matt Koch — in his first Rockies appearance this season after being called up from Triple-A Albuquerque — walked Kyle McCann on his first four pitches. But Max Schuemann flied out to right.
McMahon’s swing relieved some of the frustration of left-hander Austin Gomber, who held the Athletics to one run on five hits and struck out six in a career-high-tying eight innings and left with a 2-1 lead. But the only Rockies scoring with Gomber in the game came when Elias Díaz served his fourth homer of the season, a two-run shot in the first inning off A’s starter Mitch Spence.
Gomber — whose 2.76 ERA makes him just the seventh pitcher in club history with a sub-3.00 ERA through 10 starts — has had just 24 runs of support.
