During the Indiana Fever‘s 100-93 win over the Dallas Wings, commentator Nancy Lieberman made a great apples-to-apples comparison. The Hall-of-Famer compared the Fever to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
“I believe they’re going to win a championship somewhere in the near future,” Leiberman said about the Fever. “They’re young, they’re the second-youngest team in the WNBA. They remind me a little bit of the Oklahoma City Thunder, who are the second-youngest team in the NBA.”
The quick ascensions of both teams in recent years are comparable. The Thunder went from a play-in tournament team in 2023 to the youngest first seed in league history last season. They look to be in the infancy stages of a championship window.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has emerged as one of the league’s best players. He finished runner-up for MVP last season. Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams round out one of the best trios. Both should flirt with All-Star status next season.
After a 1-8 start, the Fever have caught fire. They sit at 17-16 and have won four in a row. Rookie phenom Caitlin Clark has taken the league by storm. The 22-year-old has already broken several records and was named an All-Star in her first year. She is the face of the league and will go down as one of the greatest basketball players ever.
Clark is the face of the Fever, but Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston were also All-Stars this season. They round out one of the league’s best trio. Sounds familiar?
Despite their youth, the Fever will be a playoff threat. Clark will be the best player on the floor in any playoff matchup, which gives Indiana a puncher’s chance. Just like was the case with OKC this past season with Gilgeous-Alexander, who almost single-handedly forced a Game 7 against the Dallas Mavericks in the second round.
Lieberman has been a vocal supporter of Clark. This accurate comparison is the latest example of that. She’s spent time on the Bally Sports Oklahoma broadcast crew, so her familiarity with the Thunder likely helped her brainstorm both squad’s similar journeys.
