If you haven’t played Elden Ring‘s Seamless Co-Op mod, I highly recommend it. There’s something magical about exploring the game’s massive open world with someone else without wrestling with FromSoftware’s usual drop-in drop-out style of multiplayer.
It seems FromSoftware understands the appeal, too. In an interview with PC Gamer, FromSoftware president Hideteka Miyazaki broached the topic of full multiplayer playthroughs.
“It’s definitely not something we actively oppose or want to downplay, wanting to go through the whole game together,” Miyazaki said. “In terms of where we were with Elden Ring, it was simply a case of wanting that more loose, casual style – drop in, defeat a boss, drop out. It doesn’t put any technical restrictions on the player, it just sort of lets them complete this focus and then move on, so to speak.”
I wrote about how my first-ever Soulsbourne experience was playing Elden Ring with a friend, and how it helped me enjoy a genre I had bounced off of multiple times. It’s good to see that Miyazaki and FromSoftware recognise this as a valid playstyle, even if you can’t currently do it without mods in Elden Ring.
Miyazaki followed this up by saying it’s actually something the studio might consider for future games. “That’s not to say we won’t consider other ways like you and your friend played, from beginning to end, total co-op—that’s not to say we won’t consider ideas like that with our future games,” he told PC Gamer.
The Seamless Co-Op mod is by far the most popular mod for Elden Ring on Nexus, racking up over 3.6 million downloads. This is something that won’t have eluded FromSoftware’s notice. There’s no guarantees, but it would be gratifying to see a more full-fledged multiplayer system in a future FromSoftware title.
Elden Ring’s first expansion Shadow of the Erdtree releases June 21.
