Lost Ark’s recent April “Darkness Unleashed” Update adds, among other features, new endgame content. The most exciting addition is the new Thaemine Legion Raid. In a conversation with Game Rant, publisher Amazon Games and developer Smilegate shared some background information on Lost Ark’s newest raid boss, the ‘Legion Commander of Darkness’ Thaemine.
Lore-wise, Thaemine is the most powerful Legion Commander – stronger than the Legion Commanders players have previously faced. As such, Smilegate wanted the encounter to be wholly unique, going so far as not reusing any elements from previous Legion encounters.
“Not A Good Shooter”: XDefiant Draws Mixed Opinions As Latest Playtest Goes Live
Some fans don’t believe XDefiant is in any state to be released soon.
“To make the raid feel truly epic, the team combined assets such as cutscenes, backgrounds, sound effects, and music, with the overall combat experience. All in all, Thaemine is definitely the upgraded version of existing commanders,” Smilegate revealed.
Delve Into Darkness
The raid’s setting is thematic, occurring in Thaemine’s fortress of Dark Baratron. The purpose of Baratron is to drain the light from Arkesia. So, players will have to delve into “the very core of darkness” to reach Thaemine. Baratron gets “more chaotic” as players progress deeper into the raid, each of the three gates have a different gimmick.
Thaemine is intended to be more difficult than other Legion Commanders, “As the last Legion Commander standing, he has high damage, which makes evasion or defence with expert timing essential,” the developer revealed. “Not only that, plenty of new patterns and gimmicks are added which makes thinking, predicting and analysing important as well.”
However, Thaemine has fewer “ultimate” gimmicks, a situation where a boss’ patterns trigger independently of the combat situation. Smilegate has also strived to make the raid less dependent on every single member of a group acting perfectly.
Also added in the April Update is a new gear system, called Gear Transcendence. These are upgrades for the basic effects of gear that are earned from clearing the Thaemine Legion Raid. The intention is that players will gradually upgrade their gear over time, allowing for steady improvements in power and defence.
Though Thaemine is the last of the Legion Commanders, Smilegate stresses that “…there will be more raids coming in the future.”
