Keyshawn Davis: “Gustavo Is About To Get Messed Up”

Lightweight contender Keyshawn Davis is convinced that he’s going to make mincemeat of his hand-picked opponent Gustavo Lemos (29-1, 19 KOs) this Friday, November 8th, in their ten-round battle on ESPN+ at the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia.

Lemos is NOT the guy they wanted the still-green 2020 Olympic silver medalist Keyshawn (11-0, 7 KOs) to fight. They were looking toward matching Keyshawn against 38-year-old Nicholas Walters, and it’s understandable why.

Keyshawn has shown some flaws in his game that are a red flag that he’s not ready to be matched against cutting-edge opposition without getting beat. For Top Rank to want Walters, it suggests they’re not confident in him.

“I’m here to make great fights, and I’m proving it. I hand-picked a tough fight for my homecoming,” said Keyshawn Davis to Fighthype, talking about his fight against Gustavo Lemos on Friday night on November 8th.

“Every time y’all see me fight, y’all are going to love to see me fight. The co-main is a world championship fight. You got Abdullah Mason on the card, Troy Isley, my brother Keon and Kelvin. There’s so much talent on this card. This is the best Top Rank card of the year by far from bottom to top,” Keyshawn continued.

Keyshawn’s brothers aren’t great talents, and none of them show the type of ability to be top contenders or world champions. They’re just Keyshawn’s brothers and that’s it. There’s not much else to say about them. Abdullah Mason is easily the best fighter on the entire career and has potential that Keyshawn can only dream about. Top Rank isn’t rushing Mason, though, and that’s a shame because he’s ready now to fight much better opposition than the guys they’ve been feeding him.

“You could tell who Top Rank is pushing to be the next star. They believe in me. They know I got all the potential, and charisma, and talent to take them there. I’m here to be Top Rank’s next star. I’m here to forefront Top Rank. I’m here to be the heart of Top Rank because they need it right now.

“They believe in me and pushing me toward that, and I’m here to stay for them. They’ve been treating me right, as y’all can see,” said Keyshawn. “We’re here to take Top Rank to the next level. I’m going to be ready to fight, but when I walk out, it’s going to be like x two. Gustavo is about to get f**** up.”

It’s true that Top Rank is pushing Keyshawn, but not because he’s going to be the flagship fighter for their company. He’s being pushed because he’s wacky, personable and has more potential to gain attention outside of the ring than anyone else Top Rank has got. But in terms of talent, Keyshawn lags far behind fighters like Vasily Lomachenko, Abduallh Mason, Raymond Muratalla, and Denys Berinchyk. Those fighters are far more advanced.

“It’s going to be a hell of a fight. Gustavo is coming to fight. If y’all ain’t seen my last fight, go watch it because that’s how Gustavo is going to fight. Y’all going to enjoy it as well from round one to round ten. My last fight [against Miguel Madueno] was action-packed,” said Keyshawn.

Davis has shown more willingness to throw punches in this fight, and use less wrestling if he wants to defeat Lemos because this guy is going to be putting hands on him.

If you’ve followed Keyshawn’s amateur career, you’ll note that he stresses out when he faces opposition that punch holes through him. When Keyshawn gets hit hard, he loses his focus and fights like he’s lost his senses. He’s someone who doesn’t handle being met with fierce enemy fire. He’s at his best when fighting someone who is smaller, slower, and weaker. His matches against Jose Pedraza and Anthony Yigit are examples of the type of opponents he does well against.

Davis’s last fight against Miguel Madueno on July 6th isn’t the ideal one for fans to watch if they want to get excited about his match against Lemos on Friday night because he was terrible in that match. Keyshawn fell apart under the pressure from Madueno and threw the rule book out the window.
