Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy has found himself in a bit of hot water lately.
He’s used to making noteworthy statements at the podium mind you — this is the same Mike Gundy of “I’m a man, I’m 40″ fame — but at 3-6 this season with an 0-6 record in the Big 12, Gundy went hard after his critics earlier this week, many of whom are actually fans of his program just wanting to see the Cowboys be better.
“In most cases when people are negative and voice their opinion, they’re the same ones that can’t pay their own bills. They’re not taking care of themselves. They’re not taking care of their own family. They’re not taking care of their own job that they have an obligation to speak out and complain about others because it makes them feel better. Then in the end when they go to bed at night, they’re the same failure they were before they said anything negative about anybody else” Gundy had said.
The long-time head coach issued an apology later to any OSU fans who may have been offended, but he hasn’t won everybody back over.
Sure, Paul Finebaum isn’t an Oklahoma State fan, but he is one of the more plugged in media members out there as it relates to college football. Finebaum didn’t seem to like Gundy’s apology, saying this about the head coach on his show:
“I’m sure if I looked hard I could find somebody, but I don’t think there is a bigger clown in college football than Mike Gundy,” Finebaum said on Wednesday, according to On3. “It [this season] has been a mess, but I just think he’s so out of touch with what I think are the players that I think he needs to play for him. He’s had so many great players and he’s done so little with them.”
Gundy has been at Oklahoma State since 2005 and he boasts a 169-85 overall record, including a 12-6 bowl record.
He’s about as close to a “lifer” as it gets for a head coach, so it will be interesting to see if he’s able to get himself out of this storm without getting into too much heat with OSU’s fanbase.
He has three more shots to get a Big 12 win with TCU, Texas Tech and No. 20 Colorado left on the schedule.
