Bungie’s Destiny franchise is finally headed to mobile devices. Announced today, Bungie is collaborating with seasoned mobile developer NetEase (Dead by Daylight Mobile, Naraka Bladepoint) for Destiny: Rising, which is a free-to-play game that seeks to bring the Destiny experience to mobile gamers.
Destiny: Rising will take place in an “alternate timeline” featuring new stories, characters, abilities, and more. The announcement was accompanied by a trailer featuring “pre-alpha in-game capture” footage.
While no release date is mentioned, the F2P game’s first closed alpha kicks off on November 1. Those interested can sign up to playtest the game on iOS or Android devices. Alongside the announcement trailer, the studio also pushed out a “Developer Preview,” in which NetEase talks about Destiny: Rising and their goal in creating the franchise’s mobile version.
What Is Destiny: Rising About?
The Story
Destiny: Rising is set in an alternate timeline, many years before Destiny 1 & 2. This timeline allows for a different exploration of how humanity began to rise from the ashes of the Collapse, when invaders from beyond the stars ended what was once a golden age.
The fallen deity, the Traveler, used its light to create Ghosts who sought out fallen denizens of humanity and brought them back as Lightbearers, immortals empowered with unique abilities.
The beginning of our stage is set at a moment when humanity is putting behind these dark times and building the foundations of what will become the Last City. As survivors seek refuge, they gather in outposts like Haven to build toward a better tomorrow and gather strength against the remaining threats on Earth.

Characters and Classes
When it comes to features, NetEase says Destiny: Rising’s “unique setting” will provide an opportunity for players to witness some of the franchise’s most legendary Lightbearers in their “formative years.” Expect characters like Ikora Rey, the Iron Lord Jolder, and a youthful Kabr to be present in the game, and more importantly, you’ll be able to play as these characters confirmed. NetEase says that the mobile game is “an era before the Guardians were fully defined, and the classes of Hunters, Titans and Warlocks have not yet been solidified,” which suggests we shouldn’t expect your traditional Destiny 2 class to be present in the game. For the closed alpha, expect 11 unique characters to be available, but NetEase is already promising more will be added in the future.
Will Destiny: Rising Feature PvP?
While PvE (Player vs. Environment) is a given since that’s Destiny’s core gameplay loop, NetEase has also confirmed PvP (Player vs. Player) will be part of the mobile game. Closed Alpha participants can expect a new mode called Shifting Gates that is specifically crafted for the franchise’s mobile version.
Will Destiny players jump at the chance to play a mobile version of the franchise? We’ll have to wait and see how the alpha’s reception goes to determine if gamers are interested.
