I remember hearing not too long ago that the Chelsea owners were keen to have some former Chelsea players more involved in the backroom setup. However, here we are down the line and with no ex-players involved in any capacity, at least in the boardroom.
I’m not saying we should just be bringing in any old player because as we know, just because you’ve played professional football it doesn’t mean that your opinion in necessarily a good one, even if you are entitled to it like all of us are too.
But football people like Frank Lampard who have a natural football brain and intelligent mind, should absolutely be in the Chelsea setup.
We all know he had a rough time as interim manager and as a head coach overall in his managerial career so far really. But I’ve always believed his calling is in a director-type role in recruitment. A squad building role. A talent-spotting role. An advisor role. I think there would not be many better than Lampard for those roles, especially for Chelsea.
We all know how much he loves this club and wants to see it do well, and he genuinely knows exactly what we need.
In terms of squad building, I’d have given him the keys at the start of our project. Lampard has a top knowledge of modern day players and as the kids would say, he knows ball.
We’ve seen Lampard trying to sign players like Jude Bellingham, Erling Haaland, and Declan Rice at Chelsea before they got ridiculously expensive. He was also close to signing Viktor Gyokeres at Everton for just £10m. It was Lampard who bought Thiago Silva to Chelsea too. Smart mind.
As well as all that, just his name is appealing to many players. Having Lampard calling you up to come and join you will often be all any player ever needs to hear.
If Lampard was listened to at Chelsea the first time around, then we would have already had our spine at this club that the new owners could have come in and built around. Yet here we are, into the third season of their tenure, still lacking a real spine to this team.
‘Inconsistency will be there – young players bring that,’ Lampard said earlier this week after watching Chelsea draw 1-1 with Crystal Palace at home.
‘If you look at moments in the game where Chelsea are on top, maybe they aren’t clinical enough and then you can always feel the game can swing on them.
‘You do wonder if that bit of experience through the spine of the team isn’t there and you’ll have to wait for that but there’s certainly a lot of talent in there.’
He’s spot on, and says what many of us have been saying for a long time now. Imagine that influence at board level? I think we’d have been in a much better spot than where we currently are if we had his footballing knowledge on the board, I genuinely do.
It’s not too late either, bring him in. He’s qualified, he did his Director courses and he’s ready to work. The only thing is that I’d heard he still wants to make it as a coach and backs himself to make it as a coach. So I believe he will still want to try that.
But if I was Chelsea, I’d be on the phone every day persuading Lampard to take a role heading up first team recruitment at the club, without a doubt.
