Canelo Vs. Munguia: The $90 “Meh” Fest Nobody Wanted

With 8 days to go before the May 4th fight between Canelo Alvarez and Jaime Munguia event on May 4th, there is zero buzz about this fight from fans on social media.

It’s too late to give Munguia the boot and find a replacement that fans want to see Canelo fight, but the organizers should be thinking of something to lure fans into purchasing this event.

The PPV Price That’s the Real Joke

Canelo should have fought Crawford and had Munguia fight David Morrell or Benavidez on the undercard. That would have made more sense, especially with the out-of-this-galaxy PPV price they’re charging for the May 4th event. They’re charging an eye-watering $89.99 for fans to see Canelo fight Munguia in a cherry-pick fight on Amazon Prime Video and DAZN PPV.

This ain’t the Super Bowl, and casuals have no idea who Munguia is because he’s spent his entire career fighting cream puffs. Mix in a horrible undercard and a steep PPV price, and it spells disaster.

Canelo should have listened to the fans ahead of time that they weren’t interested in seeing him fight Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs), with his 100% inflated resume. They wanted Canelo to fight David Benavidez or Terence Crawford next. Munguia is still seen largely as a prospect at this point because he’s still not fought any credible opponents despite being an 11-year pro.

1. High Price: Asking fans to pay $89.99 to watch the Canelo-Munguia event on Amazon Prime Video and DAZN PPV is a mistake. That’s way too high, and the undercard packaged with it is atrocious, one of the worst I think I’ve seen for a high-priced event in a long, long time.

2. Munguia’s Weak credentials: The Mexican fighter Munguia hasn’t beaten anyone good enough for fans to be excited about him fighting Canelo in a $90 PPV event. Munguia’s best career wins are against Sergiy Derevyanchenko and John Ryder. Those guys are old and recently beaten. The 27-year-old Munguia has fake manufactured fighter written all over him, and fans aren’t falling it like they’ve done in the past with similar fighters with inflated resumes filled with wins over cab drivers.

The Predictable and Boring Outcome

Promoter Leonard Ellerbe is picking Canelo by knockout over Munguia in their fight on May 4th in Las Vegas. Ellerbe views the “come forward’ fighting style of the easy-to-hit Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) as “tailor-made” for Canelo to knockout, and so do the fans.

“Munguia’s style is come forward and the way I see it just going one way, Canelo gonna light his a** up,” said Leonard Ellerbe to Fight Hub TV about Canelo Alvarez’s fight against Jaime Munguia on May 4th.

“I expect this fight to end in a knockout. [Munguia’s] tailor-made for him. This will be one of Canelo’s better performances.”
