Caitlin Clark wants people to register to vote after liking Taylor Swift endorsement

INDIANAPOLIS — After liking pop superstar Taylor Swift‘s post endorsing current presidential candidate Kamala Harris, Fever rookie Caitlin Clark is encouraging people across the country to register to vote.

Clark has a huge platform of her own — her liking of Swift’s post was quickly picked up by fans on Instagram and X, and garnered multiple news articles, including those from IndyStar and USA Today. The Fever rookie, who grew into a phenom in her junior year at Iowa, has 2.9 million followers on Instagram and nearly 500,000 on X.

“I have this amazing platform, so I think the biggest thing would be just to encourage people to register to vote,” Clark said when asked, in part, if she would endorse Harris. “I think for myself, this is the second time I can vote in an election at age 22. I could vote when I was 18, so I think, do that. That’s the biggest thing I can do with the platform that I have, and that’s the same thing Taylor did. I think continuing to educate yourself with the candidates that we have, the policies that they’re supporting. I think that’s the biggest thing you can do, and that’s what I would recommend to every single person that has that opportunity in our country.”

Clark previously hasn’t been vocal about her political views, but is an avid supporter of Swift — she attended Swift’s Eras Tour in Minneapolis in July 2023.

Multiple WNBA players have signaled their support for Harris; New York Liberty guard Courtney Vandersloot and Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner have worn shirts endorsing Harris ahead of games.

WNBA players have frequently delved into politics, as well. Maya Moore, one of Clark’s idols, stepped away from the game to advocate for the release of Jonathan Irons, who was wrongly convicted and originally sentenced to 50 years in prison. Moore was also one of the pivotal people in helping the Lynx lead one of the first Black Lives Matter movements in 2016, according to CNN.

Players on the Atlanta Dream and across the WNBA also campaigned to oust owner Kelly Loeffler, a Georgia senator that clashed with her team on Black Lives Matter movements in 2021. Players were successful, as Loeffler sold the team to a three-person group, which included former WNBA player Renee Montgomery.

Right now, across the league, all teams are wearing warmup shirts that say ‘Vote’ across the chest.

“We’ve got some really strong women in this league that have an opinion, and that is all power to them to stand up for things that they believe in, right?,” Fever head coach Christie Sides said. “It’s really awesome to to watch women in this league, both coaches and players, voice their opinion on things and feel really strongly about it. It’s just like you said, that’s just who we’ve been in this league. We get behind something, and we want to show our support, whatever it is.”
