Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman knows that his team has its hands full this upcoming weekend.
Arkansas (5-3, 3-2 SEC) takes on No.19 Ole Miss (6-2, 2-2 SEC) this weekend down in Fayetteville, and Pittman is already dreading having to play Rebels’ quarterback Jaxson Dart.
“He’s gotta graduate sometime. You got to get out of there. (He’s) just outstanding,” Pittman said in a recent news conference (h/t On3).” The thing that you don’t really realize with him, or maybe you do. But his ability to run, man, he can throw. He’s got Mahomes-like stuff. I’m comparing the magic throws that he makes because he can make them. I mean, you’re going ‘how (did he do that)?’ But where he’s super dangerous as well is that he can run, and he’s very, very competitive. and very, very confident. And he’s the type of guy you want leading your program.”
Patrick Mahomes threw for 11,252 yards and 93 touchdowns in three seasons at Texas Tech while also rushing for 22 touchdowns.
Dart has thrown for 9,033 yards and 58 touchdowns so far at Ole Miss while rushing for 14 touchdowns. Those numbers include 2,695 yards and 15 touchdowns (with three more rushing) this season. His 336.9 yards per game are fourth best in the nation and his 180.76 passer rating is third best in the nation. None of these numbers include one season at USC earlier in his college career.
Dart is easily one of the best all-around quarterbacks in the game and if Ole Miss keeps winning, there’s little reason he shouldn’t be mentioned as a Heisman Trophy contender.
He may not ever end up being Mahomes, but Arkansas’ head coach is wise to be weary of him heading into this contest.
