All-Breakout Prospect Team 2024

The 2024 Minor League season is nearing its end, with playoffs starting in Single-A and High-A today, the Double-A postseason slated to begin in a week and the Triple-A championship series launching two weeks from now.

Many of the game’s most highly touted prospects have played their way to the big leagues, including the first seven players on our preseason Top 100 list: Jackson Holliday, Jaison Chourio, Paul Skenes, Junior Caminero, Evan Carter, Wyatt Langford and Dylan Crews. That was totally expected.

But every Minor League season is packed with plenty of surprises as well. I’ve assembled an All-Breakout Team of prospects who couldn’t crack the top 10 on our organization Top 30s to start the year but have significantly boosted their profile since. Kristian Campbell and Alex Freeland went from not making their team’s Top 30 at all to joining our current Top 100.

Agustin Ramirez, C, Yankees/Marlins: Part of the Jazz Chisholm trade in July, Ramirez combines legit 25-homer power with solid arm strength behind the plate.

Tre’ Morgan, 1B, Rays: He might be the best defensive first baseman in the Minors and has hit more than expected, ranking fifth in the Minors in batting while slashing .333/.415/.493 with more walks (45) than strikeouts (44) in his first full pro season.

Kristian Campbell, 2B, Red Sox: He has added strength and bat speed while upgrading his right-handed stroke, and the results have been spectacular in his first full pro season: .326/.436/.558 with 20 homers and 23 steals, ranking second in the Minors in OPS (.994) while rocketing to Triple-A Worcester.

Charles McAdoo, 3B, Pirates/Blue Jays: Swapped straight up for Isiah Kiner-Falefa in July, McAdoo offers a promising combination of hitting ability and at least 20-homer power.

Alex Freeland, SS, Dodgers: He has rebounded from a lackluster first full pro season to become one of baseball’s best all-around shortstop prospects, a solid defender with 20-20 upside.

Jhostynxon Garcia, OF, Red Sox: His first name has earned him the nickname of “The Password,” while his increased power (23 homers after 11 in his first three seasons) is attracting a lot more attention from scouts.

Aidan Smith, OF, Mariners/Rays: Acquired in July as part of the Randy Arozarena deal, Smith could have solid tools across the board if his power develops.

Colby Thomas, OF, Athletics: He still flies under the radar more than he should considering his all-around tools and a monster season (first in the Minors with 75 extra-base hits, fourth with 28 homers, fifth with a .567 slugging percentage).C.J. Kayfus, DH, Guardians: He fit the standard Guardians hit-over-power profile — until he started driving the ball in the air more regularly during his first full pro season.

Quinn Mathews, LHP, Cardinals: After finishing second to Skenes in the NCAA Division I strikeout race in 2023, Mathews has gained strength and velocity, working in the mid-90s while leading the Minors with 193 strikeouts in 134 2/3 innings.

Zebby Matthews, RHP, Twins: His uncanny control has produced a 114/7 K/BB ratio in the Minors this summer and a 22/3 mark in the Majors since his promotion in mid-August.
