The UConn men’s basketball team’s quest for a  historic third straight national championship begins on Wednesday at Gampel Pavilion against Sacred Heart.

While much of men’s college basketball kicked off their seasons on Monday night, the Huskies have waited a couple of days for their first.

On Wednesday national championship banner No. 6 will be raised.

The Pioneers lost their season debut in Philadelphia, 81-70, to Temple. SHU will start  Tanner Thomas, who led the Pioneers with 22 points against Temple. Junior Aidan Carpener also added 11 points and freshman Mekhei Connor added five points in his collegiate debut.

It will be interesting to see who UConn head coach Dan Hurley starts on Wednesday. He lost a slew of players to the NBA and even got interest from the Lakers for their head coaching position, but ultimately decided to stay with the Huskies. 

Alex Karaban will definitely be in the lineup. Liam McNeeley probably would have been, too, but the fabulous freshman likely won’t play due to a lower calf injury. Hurley said about three weeks ago that McNeeley would be out for about two to three weeks, but later noted that it could be longer than that. The Huskies will be careful with their prized potential lottery pick.

This team is so deep, with competition at nearly every spot, that the starting lineup could be fluid throughout the season. It’s all about getting the right rotation sometime around February, in preparation for a potentially historic run in March.
