One of Chelsea’s ‘problems’ that I forecast at the start of this season was getting a starting Xl that was our best, yet trying to fit all of our best players in it. Right now, that’s impossible. This is a good thing, as I have highlighted in many other articles, but it can also be a hindrance, or a problem; but a good problem.
At the moment, we didn’t even get Christopher Nkunku on the pitch in a game we were searching for a goal in on Sunday. How mad is that? Nkunku for me is the best finisher we have, and is one of the best attacking midfielders we have too. But Cole Palmer plays in his position, and Nicolas Jackson deservedly starts as our 9 over him. Neither are ideal 9’s by the way, in my view.
You could move Palmer back to the right and bring Nkunku to his position. But that would then leave Mykhailo Mudryk, Pedro Neto, Noni Madueke, and Jadon Sancho all fighting for one single winger position. And I haven’t even mentioned Joao Felix.
Jackson I think is the only certainty because he is our only real striker (Marc Guiu too raw), and Palmer of course. The rest are still up for debate and are uncertain.
Neto has had a good bunch of games lately and I rate him, but Sancho had a very good first couple of games for us too and is a very dangerous player. Mudryk has been playing better in recent matches too. Madueke has gone off the boil a bit and I would not be starting him in our best Xl right now.
I’d probably go with Sancho and Neto as our wingers, Palmer as the 10, and Jackson up top. But I’m not even convinced with my own pick there because I really want a way to get Nkunku starting games but not as a 9.
What a great problem to have, even if we still do lack a true 9 in all of this.
