Luis Díaz was the star of the show as Liverpool secured a hugely convincing 4-0 win over Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen to go top of the league phase of the Champions League.
Liverpool welcomed former midfielder Xabi Alonso back to Anfield in the opposite dugout following a summer in which many fans would have wanted the Spaniard appointed as their new manager, but they did little to make him feel at home.
After first half of few good chances, the hosts ran riot with four goals in the final half-hour of the game, as Díaz scored three times and Cody Gakpo grabbed one, too.
The result means the man Liverpool instead appointed to replace Jürgen Klopp, Arne Slot, has 14 wins and a draw from his first 16 games in charge of the club.
Liverpool now have four wins from four Champions League matches under Slot, scoring 10 goals and conceding just one.
Leverkusen, meanwhile, came into this game yet to go behind at any stage in any of their Champions League games this season, and having only conceded one goal. This was only their second loss in a European game under Alonso, following defeat to Atalanta in last season’s Europa League final.
