Donald Cerrone coming out of retirement to reach 50 fights inside the octagon

Former UFC lightweight title challenger Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone announced on Tuesday that he’s coming out of retirement to seek a career milestone.  

Cerrone retired in July 2022 with 48 combined fights inside the UFC and WEC octagons.  The 41-year old wants to reach the 50 (Zuffa) fight mark.  Before he can return, Cerrone must reenter the fight promotion’s anti-doping testing pool.  In the two years away from competition, Cerrone has admittedly used performance enhancing substances.     

“I want to go back and get two more fights,” Cerrone said in a video posted to Instagram. “When I retired, I told you I was getting my hair done and get on steroids. The No. 50 has been sitting on my mind for a while. So, I’ve been working with Transcend for the last two years, taking TRT [testosterone-replacement therapy] and a bunch of peptides.

“Now, we’ve got a protocol for all you people that, ‘Oh, what if you get on it, you can’t ever come off it.’ Well, I now have to come off and piss clean, and fight in a few months. Watch this.”

Cerrone fought for the UFC lightweight championship at UFC on FOX 17 in December 2015, losing to Rafael dos Anjos via TKO.  When he retired in 2022, Cerrrone has lost his last six fights.  He already holds records for the most post-fight bonuses in UFC and WEC history (23), the most wins in Zuffa LLC history with 29, the most knockout wins in UFC history (20), the most head kick knockouts in UFC history (6), and the most fights in Zuffa LLC history with 48.
