Up until very recently, the word ‘soak’ was one I only used when telling my spouse that the dishes ‘need to soak’ in a bid to dedicate more time to gaming. However, thanks to Black Myth Wukong and the introduction of Drinks and Soaks into my life, the word has taken on a whole new meaning.
I found myself chopping and changing my Healing Gourd Soaks to try and get the most out of each swig of the nectar inside, and tweaking my mix to synergize with my current build.
It’s a fine balance, and one that can only be achieved if you actively seek out the finest Soaks in the game. These often don’t come easy, as you’ll often have to explore thoroughly, or fight a deadly boss.
But the ends justify the means, as these Soaks are a godsend when trying to complete this tough-as-nails RPG. So, to help you find your ideal blend, here are our picks for the best Soaks in Black Myth Wukong.
10 Goat Skull
Rarity: Rare
Effect | Moderately increases maximum health for a short duration |
---|---|
Location | Random chance to obtain when gathering Licorice |
We kick things off with a Soak that has the same effect as the Longevity Decoction medicine, offering players a temporary health boost when they drink from their Gourd. As anyone who has played a souls-like will tell you, having more health is never a bad thing, but as this is only a temporary boost, it’s not one that you should come to rely on.
It’s a Soak that just sneaks onto this list and no more, and this inclusion is mainly because it can be acquired rather early on. Players will have a random chance of getting this item when gathering Licorice .
So keep your fingers crossed that you nab this one early and get some use out of it because, before long, you will have a good few better options at your disposal.
9 Deathstinger
Rarity: Rare
Effect | For a short duration, after using the gourd, it inflicts a Poisoned State to the player. |
---|---|
Location | Dropped as a reward for defeating the Scorpion Lord in Purple Cloud Mountain |
It’s hard to believe that a Soak which inflicts the player with poison can be considered a good thing, but I assure you, when used with the right build, the ability to apply this harmful status effect can be a boon indeed.
Whether you want to make the most of this with the Spider Celestial Staff , or the Centipede Qiang-Jin Armor set, you’ll find that chapter four in particular has a number of great items that Deathstinger (Consumable) blends nicely with.
The only thing that will stand in your way of getting your hands on this item is the fact that you’ll need to take on the Scorpion Lord. Who just so happens to be one of the hardest bosses in the game, very close in difficulty and design to the Yin Tiger. But if you can endure their poisonous sting, you’ll get one of your own.
8 Graceful Orchid
Rarity: Epic
Effect | Using the gourd slowly recovers a small amount of Health for a short duration. |
---|---|
Location | The reward for giving Chen Loong all seed variants |
It’s strange to think that having a green thumb would aid you in a brutal game such as Black Myth Wukong, but thanks to the medicinal products you can craft with the flora around the various maps, it pays to be a bit of a plant expert.
But medicine is only one benefit of embracing a monkey gardener’s life. As, when you unlock the Ruyi Scroll, you’ll be able to give Chen Loong seeds to grow.
Which, if you manage to collect all variants of seed, will mean he will reward you with the Graceful Orchid . This effectively provides the same healing effect as the Lambbrew , but vitally, while allowing you to pick a better Gourd to use. So, to make each Gourd’s healing effects stretch a little further, this is the Soak for you.
7 Iron Pellet
Rarity: Rare
Effect | Using the gourd can no longer be interrupted by incoming attacks and also provide considerable Damage Reduction. |
---|---|
Location | Purchased from the Man-In-Stone (Chapter 2) |
Whether chugging on an Estus Flask in Dark Souls, popping Blood Vials in Bloodborne, or taking swigs from your Healing Gourd in Black Myth Wukong, one thing remains consistent across the board.
If you time your heal wrong, the boss will interrupt your action, and likely pound you to dust as a result. However, if you make the effort to precure the Iron Pellet , that issue will be a thing of the past.
This Soak ensures that if you perform a heal in battle, this action cannot be stopped once it has begun. Now, this does come with the important caveat that it doesn’t make you invincible as you heal, but it does mean that you’ll complete the action, and this can make all the difference in a fight of fine margins.
6 Fruit of Dao
Rarity: Rare
Effect | Using the gourd moderately extends the duration of Invincibility upon executing a Dodge for a short duration. |
---|---|
Location | A random drop from Fly-Whisk Daoist Enemies |
Speaking of I-Frames, we have a Soak that can give you access to some more of those precious milliseconds of invincibility. The Fruit of Dao soak is an item that essentially extends the dodge window when dodging, allowing you to evade attacks, even if your timing was a little bit off.
Which can be a godsend in fights where the attacks come thick and fast. And believe me, in this game, there are more than a few of those.
To give some more clarity here, it extends the state of invulnerability, so if you dodge too late, this item won’t get you out of jail. However, if you react a little too early, this extended duration could save your skin. So, if you find yourself spamming the dodge button endlessly, this is a good item to fit into that rather hectic playstyle.
5 Turtle Tear
Rarity: Epic
Effect | Using the gourd at full health will recover a moderate amount of Mana. |
---|---|
Location | Appears on the beach in front of the large turtle after beating Apramana Bat |
Spells are the best way to deal damage and take care of brutal bosses in Black Myth Wukong, but the problem is that there are very few ways to actually recover Mana unless you rest at a Shrine to refill the bar.
However, if you help out a certain turtle in Chapter 3, you’ll gain access to a soak, which will help you replenish Mana and keep casting killer spells.
There is a catch to the Turtle Tear, as this effect will only occur if the player has refilled their health to full before using the Gourd. However, if you’re chaining spells, then chances are that you won’t be taking too many hits.
This means you won’t need to reserve as many Gourd uses for healing. It’s a very offensive-minded strategy, but it is one that can pay off if you play your cards right.
4 Mount Lingtai Seedlings
Rarity: Epic
Effect | Using the gourd moderately extends the duration of Duplicates for the next A Pluck of Many for a short duration. |
---|---|
Location | Found in a Turtle Container near a Charface Revenant in Chapter 5 |
There are several Soaks in the game that extend the effect or exchange the power of certain spells. However, of all these options, I personally feel that the best of the bunch has to be the Mount Lingtai Seedlings , as this Soak allows you to extend the A Pluck of Many Spell, which players will likely know, is one of the most overpowered and useful spells in the game.
This will help you deal with multiple enemies at once, will help you melt the health bar of certain bosses with ease. Plus, in a bind, this additional duration can give you the time you need to regroup, apply some medicine, and jump back into the fray with a new lease of life.
So, if you’re a big fan of A Pluck of Many already, this can help you squeeze even more out of each use.
3 Guanyin’s Willow Leaf
Rarity: Mythical
Effect | Upon resurrection in battle, recover gourd uses. |
---|---|
Location | Purchased from Shen Monkey in New Game Plus. |
We can’t give this one top billing as it is one of the more inaccessible items in the game because it is only available in new game plus. It has to be said that, when you do gain access to this one, it becomes quite an asset to players, provided they also have access to Soul Remigration Pill , which is the medicine used to allow players a second chance in battle if they happen to die.
When you do use this medicine, it usually only brings you back to life with the same resources you had when you died. But with this Soak equipped, it means that you are revived with all your health recovered, and all your Gourd uses replenished again, which all but ensures that you’ll have enough in your locker to make the revival count and beat any boss you encounter.
2 Bee Mountain Stone
Rarity: Rare
Effect | When using the gourd, grants a considerable chance to take a sip without consuming gourd uses. |
---|---|
Location | Found in the Temple of Yellow Flowers in Chapter 4 |
Gourd uses are effectively to Black Myth Wukong what Estus Flask uses are to Dark Souls. Each one is a blessing that allows you to heal up and keep going in a punishing and brutal world that would rather you didn’t.
Being able to go to that well as many times as possible is ideal if you want to survive, which is why the Bee Mountain Stone is such an amazing item.
You can get this Soak just over halfway into the game, and once equipped, you will have the chance of being given a free Gourd use. It does leave things up to chance, but this random chance kicks in more than you would think, meaning that you’ll likely have 1-2 additional Gourd uses on average in a fight. These can make all the difference, so consider adding this to your setup.
1 Flower Primes
Rarity: Mythical
Effect | Using the gourd removes all Four Bane States. |
---|---|
Location | Bought from Shen Monkey in chapter 6. |
Then lastly, we have our pick of the bunch in the form of the Flower Primes Soak. This is a Soak that will not be accessible until you reach Chapter Six, but it’s still an item you’ll get a lot of use out of in the late-game fights, and when cleaning up after the credits roll.
This Soak essentially allows you to rid yourself of any status effects immediately when using the Gourd, and this can be a huge boon in specific fights.
Whether it’s using this to deal with Erlang Shen’s lightning attacks, or to make dealing with the scorching attacks of the Yao Guai Bear in Chapter One in New Game Plus.
It’s a brilliant item to have, and it means that no matter what a boss has up their sleeve, you’ll be ready. So if you intend to go for 100% in Black Myth Wukong, or play through New Game Plus, this is an essential piece of kit.
