All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte, who went on the injured list with a left ankle sprain, was reinstated before Friday’s game against the Astros, who also activated Kyle Tucker from the IL. Outfielder Jorge Barrosa was optioned to Triple-A Reno following Thursday’s game to make room for Marte.
Manager Torey Lovullo said on Thursday that once Marte was activated he may see some reps at designated hitter before going back to second base. That was indeed the case Friday, as Marte was slotted as the DH and batting leadoff. The D-backs want to manage Marte’s return carefully, just as they’ve done with Christian Walker since he came back from a left oblique strain on Tuesday.
Marte has 30 homers on the year and ranked fourth in the National League with 5.4 fWAR at the time of his injury.
