Devin Carter will have some Providence College company with him attempting to make a first impression in the NBA ranks for the 2024-25 season.
Josh Oduro has agreed to a Summer League deal with the New Orleans Pelicans. The Friars announced the signing early Friday, and their graduate big man will join the roster next month for a two-week stay in Las Vegas.
Oduro was strong during his lone season with Providence, averaging 15.9 points and 7.5 rebounds. He was an honorable-mention selection to the postseason Big East team after ranking inside the league’s top 10 in a host of categories. Oduro was a two-time all-conference selection with George Mason in the Atlantic 10 before opting to transfer and follow coach Kim English to his new job with the Friars.
“Josh is a special player,” English said in a statement. “This season he competed against some of the top players in the country in the Big East and he put up impressive numbers.”

First step to a long and prosperous career for JO! Incredibly humble, self aware, high IQ, great teammate. He’s going to carve out a spot in that league. https://t.co/ffzp80ajoI

Oduro was an all-tournament selection at the Portsmouth Invitational and played in the NABC All-Star game at the Final Four in Phoenix. He shot 56.7% from 2-point range and was inside the national top-325 in block percentage, offensive- rebounding percentage and defensive-rebounding percentage. Oduro posted five double-doubles in 34 games with Providence, which went 21-14 overall and reached the NIT.
Carter was the 13th overall selection in the NBA Draft, going to the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night. He was the third of eight players from the conference who heard his name called — four in the first round, four in the second. Oduro posted one of his nine 20-point games last season against one of Carter’s fellow lottery picks — Connecticut center Donovan Clingan went to the Portland Trail Blazers at No. 7.

Oduro could make his New Orleans debut on the opening day of the event. The Pelicans are set to tip with Minnesota on July 12 at 5 p.m. That game will be played on the UNLV campus at the Thomas & Mack Center, and all games will be broadcast on either NBA TV or the ESPN family of networks.
