Highlights
- In Avowed, you’ll always be a Godlike, but can customize how your ‘blessing’ shows.
- Your physical appearance as a Godlike reflects which god ‘touched’ you. Mysteries surrounding your patron god are part of the story.
- Customizing your Godlike may signify a patron god unrelated to forces or elements. Base race choices will probably still be availabe.
The protagonist of Avowed will always be a Godlike, but you can change the physical manifestation of your ‘blessing’ because your character doesn’t know which god has blessed them.
Obsidian Entertainment’s upcoming role-playing game Avowed shares its setting with Pillars of Eternity, the studio’s acclaimed CRPG series. While you can choose between six races in those games, your character will always be a Godlike in Avowed.
Godlikes are children born to humanoids (kith) who have been ‘touched’ or ‘blessed’ by one of the gods of Eora. This manifests in physical changes depending on which god was involved. For example, a Godlike blessed by the fire goddess Magran (Fire Godlike) may have devilish horns and glowing red eyes. A Nature Godlike is often covered by fungus and other nature-y bits.
A Mysterious Blessing
In the gameplay deep dive released by Obsidian following Summer Game Fest, we see that the player-character is a Godlike with lichen growing around their eyes. The player will get to choose which manifestation their character has, some of them are large and dramatic while others, like the one in the gameplay footage, are more subtle.

I Adore Games With Factional Reputation Systems, Like Pillars Of Eternity 2
A trackable reputation system really elevates certain narratives.
“In Avowed, you are definitely a Godlike, and being a Godlike will manifest in a number of different ways,” game director Carrie Patel revealed. “Either way, you have a connection to one of the gods, but the thing that’s unique about you is that you don’t know which one.”
This is part of the mystery of your character, and will certainly play into the larger narrative. It’s atypical for a Godlike to not know which god was involved with their birth. Tekēhu in Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, for instance, is constantly referring to the goddess of the sea Ondra who he sees as a sort of patron.
The fact that your physical appearance is customisable might mean your patron god isn’t one associated with any particular force or element. In the series thus far, we’ve seen Death, Moon, Fire, Nature, Avian, Marine, Endings and Skaen Godlikes.
Since any kith race can be Godlike, you will probably still be able to choose your character’s base race (Human, Aumaua, Dwarf, Elf or Orlan).
Avowed doesn’t currently have a release date, but Obsidian is planning to release it sometime in 2024.
