From the wasteland and a sprawling fantasy expanse to the final frontier, Bethesda has provided two beloved game series in its longevity, Fallout and Skyrim, but Starfield is taking its time to carve out the same success. The space epic may have received backlash towards the recent update, but the upcoming expansion, Shattered Space, and the overall modding community are just about keeping the title relevant.
Starfield has provided a playground for fans and professional modders to tailor the game for a more personal experience and supply entertainment by integrating skins from popular IPs in cinema and other videogames, like The Mandalorian mod or the recent Halo Armor Collection. Todd Howard believes this creative section is integral to making Bethesda’s games as good as possible.

Todd Howard Is Championing Modders Who Make “Awesome Content”
In a recent interview with YouTuber, “MrMattyPlays”, Howard praised the modding community and discussed the importance of seeing these content creators paid for invigorating gameplay with their creations. Bethesda as a whole is clearly backing this portion of the player pool to sustain the overall health of Starfield’s collective.
Howard highlighted the number of modders who have “gone from hobbyists to professional” and the studio takes full responsibility to ensure these creators “see the monetary rewards from if they make awesome content”. Generally, Bethesda’s Creation Club has received a warm reception, giving players and modders the freedom to carve out a unique gaming experience.
Touching on the Creation Club’s role in Skyrim, Howard thought “It’s important for us, that part of it gives a really healthy modding community where you do have professionals, and we’ve seen their content kind of ‘rise all boats’ in it”.
The Creation Club has also seen an increase in free Starfield mods being built, which has been somewhat of a saving grace to players who begrudge paying more money for the studio-released ones. Howard emphasized “It’s super important to us that all of that stays really really healthy. We think it’s a big fabric of who we are as a studio, how we talk about modding, what our community is there, and just make sure that we’re active and making sure it’s as good as it possibly can be for really everybody involved.”
Additionally, Howard addressed the criticism thrown towards Starfield’s Creation Kit update, as players weren’t happy about paying credits for extra missions, calling the backlash “great feedback from the community”. When asked about possibly changing how Bethesda releases content in the future, Howard said “We need to evaluate both pricing, what we put out for free, how we communicate what’s in something, and really hear from the community there.”
Starfield’s Shattered Space expansion is expected to be released sometime in the Fall 2024.
