MIAMI — Masyn Winn’s two-run homer in the 12th inning helped the St. Louis Cardinals to a 7-6 win over the Miami Marlins in the opener of a three-game series at loanDepot park on Monday night.
The Cardinals have won five of the past six; Miami has lost six straight and 12 of 14.
Winn hit an 0-2 pitch from reliever A.J. Puck an estimated 386 feet over the fence in left field and scored Pedro Pagés from third.
Both Miami and St. Louis scored runs in the 11th to keep the game going.
The Marlins added a run in the 12th on a triple from Nick Gordon and were set to tie it on Tim Anderson’s fly to right — only Dylan Carlson threw Gordon out at home.
The score was tied at 1 entering the eighth, but both teams scored three runs.
The Cardinals took a 3-1 lead in the eighth on a two-out triple by Iván Herrera; he then scored on a single from Brendan Donovan.
Miami took advantage of starter Sonny Gray being pulled with two outs and a runner on in its half of the eighth. Gray went 7 2/3 innings and was charged with two runs off five hits with four strikeouts.
Reliever JoJo Romero walked Jazz Chisholm Jr. before giving up a 3-run homer to Bryan De La Cruz, which tied the score at 4.
