BOSTON — Carlos Rodón whirled to watch ever so briefly as Jamie Westbrook’s drive smacked high atop the Green Monster, driving in another run in an uncharacteristically rough first inning for the Yankees’ left-hander.
Having allowed just four first-inning runs through his first 14 starts this season, the Red Sox got to Rodón early, then padded their advantage behind Rafael Devers’ two-run double in the second. Rodón held the damage there, but it was too much to overcome in an 8-4 loss on Saturday evening at Fenway Park.
Rodón permitted three doubles in that loud first inning (to Jarren Duran, Tyler O’Neill and Westbrook), setting the tone for a start that would snap his streak of seven winning starts.
Over that span dating to May 8, Rodón had gone 7-0 with a 2.28 ERA, marking the first time in his career that he had won more than five consecutive starts.
DJ LeMahieu flared a two-run single in the second inning that accounted for the Yankees’ production against Boston starter Cooper Criswell, who worked four innings.
Juan Soto hit his 18th home run of the season in the seventh inning, a shot that just cleared the yellow line atop the Green Monster in left field.
