- Bloodborne references in Astro Bot are a celebration of PlayStation history, not teasers for new content, says game’s creative director.
- An influx of references in both Astro’s Playroom and Astro Bot has led fans to feel like they’ve “been trolled.”
- FromSoftware president expresses openness to a PC release of Bloodborne, but IP rights remain a barrier.
Just when you think you’ve got a glimmer of hope, the rug is pulled right out from under you. When PlayStation revealed the pre-order bonuses and editions for the highly anticipated sequel to Astro’s Playroom, Astro Bot, earlier this month, fans speculated that the included Bloodborne costume was a tease for something new.
Unfortunately, that’s now confirmed to not be the case, as the game’s creative director Nicolas Doucet tells Eurogamer that “there’s no secret meaning” behind the Bloodborne references and easter eggs, both in Astro Bot and a recent update for Astro’s Playroom. He went on to say that it is merely “a celebration of the whole PlayStation history.”

League Of Legends Studio Is “Trying To Broaden” Gameplay Modes To Accommodate Aging Demographic
League of Legends game director Pu Liu noted the player base is “aging up” but “it’s not inherently a bad thing”.
While fans were initially miffed that there was no reference at all to Bloodborne in the Astro Bot announcement trailer, it didn’t take long for the community to feel like they were being trolled when PlayStation confirmed that the game’s Digital Deluxe Edition would include early unlocks for three different outfits, one of which was Astro’s Yharnam Tourist outfit.
But then came along a new update for 2020’s Astro’s Playroom, which added new trophies, a new collection of gatchas, and a “mysterious portal.” There were also a handful of Bloodborne references thrown in with the update, further adding fuel to the fire.
While there seemed to be a rather sudden influx of Bloodborne references making the rounds in the Astro universe, it turns out that there’s absolutely nothing to them. When speaking to Eurogamer, Astro Bot’s creative director explained that Team Asobi “put [its] attention towards the characters.”
If you asked a Bloodborne fan which one they want more: a re-release on PC, a remake, or a sequel, you’d probably got varying answers. But when it comes to a PC version of the game, FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki once again addressed the outcry for a re-release, telling PCGamer that it’s “nothing [he’s] opposed to.”
Unfortunately, FromSoftware doesn’t own the IP rights to Bloodborne, so the decision isn’t up to the studio. But Miyazaki did say he would “love [for] more players to be able to enjoy it.”
