Manchester United ended a dismal season on a high as they defeated arch-rivals Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley on Saturday to lift the FA Cup, their 13th triumph in the competition.
Coming into the contest, most pundits gave the Red Devils zero chance of beating Pep Guardiola’s side but on the day, manager Erik ten Hag had the perfect gameplan to thwart the league winners.
United hardly allowed space for City to play their typical passing game, while being extremely effective on the break. It was a deserved win after a disappointing league campaign that saw the club finish eighth in the league, their worst-ever finish in the Premier League.
Prior to the Wembley showpiece, rumours of an impending sack for the Dutch manager was doing the rounds with new co-owners INEOS unhappy with the results and the performance from the team.
EtH’s uncertain future
The former Ajax coach’s decision to play a high-transition game this term has been criticised heavily while his reluctance to adopt a more conservative approach despite a mounting injury crisis seemed perplexing to most fans.
But a second trophy in as many seasons as done Ten Hag’s chances of remaining at the helm no harm with certain sections advocating for his stay.
INEOS are said to be beginning a season review after which a decision on the manager will be taken. In the meanwhile, the club has reportedly met agents of managers such as Kieran McKenna, Mauricio Pochettino and Roberto De Zerbi.
United have vehemently denied these reports but they have actively considered a change, which might cost a lot more now that the 20-time English league champions have qualified for the Europa League.
The Manchester Evening News have now reported that INEOS are open to keeping Ten Hag for another season and have informed intermediaries of all potential candidates the same.
“Manchester United are considering retaining Erik ten Hag as their manager for next season.
“United officials have notified representatives of potential replacements that they have not discounted the possibility of keeping the Dutchman after he guided the club to their 13th FA Cup triumph over Manchester City on Saturday.”
Ten Hag to stay?
This update does not mean the manager will definitely stay but this marks a stunning turnaround for the former Ajax coach who looked dead and buried after that Crystal Palace game earlier this month.
With a proper behind-the-scene system and focus on only management, Ten Hag could yet prove his worth like he did in his previous club stints.
He might need to tweak his style as per INEOS’ requirements and could be forced to hand over his recruitment responsibilities as well. But finally, he has the chance to succeed at the Theatre of Dreams.
Ten Hag has one year remaining on his current deal while United have the option of triggering a one-year extension should they choose.
