Key Takeaways
- Far Cry 3 is arguably the best game in the series and perfect for fans of open-world shooters.
- Rainbow Six Siege offers a masterclass in tactical multiplayer gameplay.
- Payday 2 is an addictive heist game, especially with friends.
First-person shooters are part of one of the most saturated genres in gaming. There are so many that you can’t realistically play them all, and they vary massively in quality.
Your gaming time (and hard drive space) are precious, so let me share some of the best shooters you can enjoy with your PS Plus subscription.
10 Killing Floor 2
More Than COD Zombies At Home
Many games have tried to emulate the success of Call of Duty Zombies, but few have succeeded quite like Killing Floor 2.
Killing Floor wears its inspiration on its sleeve but does enough to distinguish itself. Maps are well-designed and intricate, and there are plenty of creative zombie (ZED) variants to keep you busy.
The weapon selection is superb, and zombie slaying is as fun as ever. Killing Floor also has a magnificent, headbanging metal soundtrack, a perfect match for such unfiltered violence.
9 Sniper Elite 5
The Shot That Matters The Most
Everyone loves sniping in shooting games, so why not play a title where it’s the main focus?
Sniper Elite 5 is the latest game in the series. You play as Karl Fairburne, a legendary sniper in the Allied forces during WW2.
The highlight of all the Sniper Elite games is the extraordinarily visceral X-ray cam. You can see your bullet fly through the air, shred flesh, and splinter bones in glorious slow motion.
It’s the sort of thing you would see in a Mortal Kombat game, but it works so well in this historically-themed shooter.
8 World War Z Aftermath
Now, THAT’S A Lot Of Zombies
World War Z Aftermath is a horde-style zombie shooter with character classes and tower defense mechanics.
Gunplay feels great, and wave-based combat is as addictive as ever. There’s even a decent story mode, and it’s so much better with a friend or two.
The most impressive part of World War Z is the sheer number of Zombies that can appear. Literal tidal waves of the undead can storm your position, and it’s a visual spectacle I’ve not seen recreated elsewhere in the genre.
7 Bulletstorm
Killing In Style
Bulletstorm is a unique first-person shooter that grades you based on style instead of body count.
You can enjoy the campaign with friends and have all the tools you need to set up some hilarious kills.
The possibilities are endless. For example, you can pull an enemy towards you with an energy lasso, drop kick him into the sky, and blow his head off midair. The funny part is that it’s not even impressive by Bulletstorm standards.
Trick shots were a big deal back in the cheesy montage days, and Bulletstorm is a game all about nailing those badass, showstopping kills.
6 Doom 64
An All-Time Classic
The original Doom is an undisputed masterpiece and was ported to almost every machine that could run it.
The N64 version is special as it offers a unique campaign that is not seen on other platforms. Doom 64 also has a far more atmospheric soundtrack, dramatically changing the mood.
On PS Plus, Doom 64 has tons of welcome enhancements, including Gyro Aiming, which is phenomenal if you get used to it.
Doom 64 feels like a true sequel to Doom and Doom 2. That’s not to say Doom 3 is bad, but it’s sometimes more of a horror game and divisive because of it.
5 Timesplitters: Future Perfect
An FPS Masterpiece
All of the Timesplitters games are absolute bangers, but Future Perfect is the most complete offering in the trilogy.
Timesplitters: Future Perfect is an arena shooter full of weird, wonderful characters and dozens of weapons. There are robust customization options to make the game mode of your dreams, and there’s even a map editor.
Future Perfect also boasts a campaign and one of the whackiest challenge modes you’ll ever experience in a shooter.
There’s a reason fans have been pining for a sequel for almost two decades. If you haven’t played before, you’ll discover why the series is so beloved.
4 Rainbow Six Siege
A Top-Tier Tactical Shooter
Rainbow Six Siege is a dominant force in the tactical shooter space and has maintained a respectable player count for years.
Operators have unique abilities, but precision gunplay and map knowledge separate the good players from the bad. Gunfights are intense and reward pinpoint accuracy.
The only downside of dropping into Siege in 2024 is the difficulty curve. If you relish a challenge, this is a game you can easily drop thousands of hours into mastering.
3 Far Cry 3
The Best In The Series
Far Cry 3 is an exceptional first-person adventure set on the fictional Rook Islands in the Pacific.
The setting is beautiful but sullied by the hostile soldiers at every turn. The highlight of Far Cry 3 is its antagonist, Vaas Montenegro. He’s a bizarrely charismatic psychopath who steals the show whenever he appears and is arguably one of the best video game baddies ever.
Thanks to the UbiSoft Classics library, you can play any of the Far Cry games with your PS Plus subscription. Far Cry 3 easily has the best villain, but you can’t go wrong with the newer entries, either.
2 Payday 2
Better Than The Sequel
Payday 2 is arguably the best “heist” game on the market, featuring plenty of maps, weapons, and unique approaches to that sweet cash reward.
There’s a lot more to Payday 2 than just shooting. You can initiate plenty of heists without ever firing a shot, but when you inevitably screw up, those gun skills will come in handy.
Payday 2 may look a little dated compared to Payday 3, but the wealth of content is incomparable. Meta progression with skill trees is furiously addictive, and it’s the perfect shooter to play with friends.
1 Doom Eternal
Rip And Tear
Doom Eternal is the latest installment in the franchise, taking the series to incredible new heights.
The title boasts intense, fast-paced combat, solid gunplay, lashings of gore, and, of course, thousands of monsters to kill.
Many iconic weapons from the series return and look better than ever. Eternal has a greater emphasis on verticality and traversal than its predecessors. Once you master the tools, every arena becomes a playground.
Doom Eternal is one of those games where the soundtrack completes the package. Gunfights are fun, but they are so much better with a punchy ensemble roaring in the background.
If you’ve never played Doom, you’re spoiled for choice of fantastic titles to enjoy.
