On Sept. 25, Bear Alexander‘s father told ESPN that the 6-foot-3, 315-pound former five-star defensive tackle intends to redshirt this season and enter the transfer portal.
After transferring from Georgia to USC in the spring of 2023, Alexander commenced the 2024 campaign with high expectations. Named to the Bednarik Award watch list in the preseason, Alexander grew unhappy with his playing time for the Trojans. He played only 21 of USC’s 58 defensive snaps against Michigan on Sept. 21.
In 2023, Alexander played in all 13 of the Trojans’ games, starting in 12. However, his role on the USC defensive line declined this year. He was essentially a second-team player in Southern Cal’s first three games.
Alexander’s departure leaves USC with three defensive tackles who have played significant roles thus far in the defensive schemes of coordinator D’Anton Lynn — Gavin Meyer, Nate Clifton and Kobe Pepe. Meyer transferred to USC in the offseason after playing four years for Wyoming, Clifton transferred from Vanderbilt and Pepe is a redshirt senior who has been with the Trojans since 2020. Freshman DT Jide Abasiri and sophomore DT Elijah Hughes are likely to see increased roles.
Addressing the media following the announcement of Alexander’s plans, Lynn expressed confidence in the defensive tackle position group.
“I feel good. We have a good rotation of guys. We feel like that’s one of the strengths of the team,” Anton said, via Kendell Hollowell of Sports Illustrated.
When Alexander signed with Georgia in the 2022 recruiting cycle, he was the No. 2 defensive tackle and the No. 9 overall player in the class. In 2023, Alexander had 48 tackles, seven tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Through the Trojans’ first three games in 2024, he had only four tackles.
Following the Michigan game, Alexander exhibited his discontentment on social media, posting “Free 9-owe” on X (formerly Twitter). Alexander’s jersey number is 90.
Alexander has a significant history of transferring. Not only did he transfer from Georgia to USC, but also he played at four different high schools, and he made overtures about entering the transfer portal this past offseason.
Because he has only played in three games this season, Alexander is eligible to redshirt, and by redshirting, he will have two remaining years of college football eligibility.
