The Florida Gators are a mess right now, and former coach Urban Meyer is sitting on the sidelines without a coaching job. As a result, some have questioned whether Meyer might return to Florida, even on a temporary basis, to try to right the ship.
Meyer responded to that speculation on Wednesday, and his stance will not come as good news to Gators fans dreaming of his return. In the latest episode of “The Triple Option” podcast, Meyer shut the door on returning to Florida in any capacity.
“That ship has sailed,” Meyer said. “I want that program to do well so bad. I know so many people there. We gave a big part of our life to that program, but that ship has sailed.”
Florida sits at 1-2, and Saturday’s home loss to Texas A&M was the breaking point for a lot of fans. Meyer has not shied away from the fact that Florida’s struggles bother him a great deal. He has also said repeatedly that he has no desire to coach again, but that will never completely shut down the rumor mill.
Meyer went 65-15 over six seasons with Florida from 2005 to 2010, winning a pair of national championships.
