Snake Eater Showcases Eva and Ocelot In New Trailer

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a long-awaited remake using Unreal Engine 5, and the Toyko Game Show just gave us the most comprehensive in-engine trailer yet today.

Metal Gear fans have had a good week so far, with the PC port of Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty getting a major update that finally added keyboard and mouse support.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater came out in 2004 for the PlayStation 2, and for many gamers, it was the introduction to espionage, betrayal, and Snakes & Ladders.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is the first proper Metal Gear title after the series creatorHideo Kojima left in 2015 to work on Death Stranding.

The year is 1964, and the Cold War is not looking so cold for much longer. The protagonist is no other than a young Big Boss, way before his paramilitary business ventures.

Maverick Green Beret-turned-spook Naked Snake is sent to the valleys around Tselinoyarsk in the Soviet Union with orders to extract a top weapons scientist and stop the deployment of the Shagohod nuclear-powered tank.

The trailer opens with a remake of the iconic high-altitude parachute insertion, with Naked Snake arriving in the Soviet jungle in the bug-looking HALO mask.

Next Gen Please, But Make It Retro

Metal Gear Solid Delta has a layer of jank that is somehow endearing. The graphics are undoubtedly Unreal 5 quality, but some design choices have a PlayStation 3 flair.

The voiceovers and audio mixing are primarily ported from the originalMetal Gear Solid 3, and feel almost comically out of place over the ray-traced lighting pouring into the scene, but in a good way.

This remake is the pinnacle of Snake Eater, with all its details finally appreciated in full HD.

Watching KGB cowboy Ocelot go through his gunslinging routine with his standard-issue Makarov pistol is hypnotic, and the feeling translates to the rest of the trailer. The scars on GRU Colonel Volgin have a gnarly depth now.

The Tokyo Game Show preview also offers the first look at Eva, stunning as ever in an olive jumpsuit with old-school pilot goggles around her neck.

Previous looks into Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater show movement mechanics similar to those found in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015).

Combat, meanwhile, is more reminiscent of the 2008 title Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriot, released for PlayStation 3.

There is no accurate release date announced for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.

The latest plan tentatively says the game will come out this year, but as Assassin’s Creed Shadows and STALKER 2 have learned the hard way, plans and reality do not agree very often.
