Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has lauded Andre Onana’s performances for the Red Devils this season.
With a meagre seven points from their opening six matches, there has been very little for any United fan to write home about so far in this campaign.
This was devastatingly on show yesterday as United were obliterated 0-3 at home by Tottenham Hotspur and in truth, the scoreline was kind on a completely out of sorts United team.
Whilst the Old Trafford faithful will have been left highly unimpressed by many who wore a red shirt yesterday, one player who has performed something close to his best is keeper Andre Onana.
The Cameroonian endured a tough first six months to life at United last year but he has turned himself into one of the club’s most consistent performances and made numerous saves yesterday to stop the game turning into a cricket score.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand Presents, the former United defender praised Onana for his showing yesterday and the season as a whole.
Commenting on his influence on the game he stated, “without him (Onana), it’s six or seven today. Onana has been good this season, he’s stepped up, he’s made some big saves.”
Whilst he admitted that the keeper had not been perfect, the former centre back said “what I expected to see from Onana is what I’m seeing this season.”
“He’s the only one today who comes out of the game with any sort of credit, any sort of positives.”
“He can walk away with his head high. He won’t because he’ll be sitting there hurting, he conceded three goals. But he wasn’t at fault for any of the goals, he kept us in the game.”
The 28 year old hit the headlines with a wonder save versus Crystal Palace and had kept three clean sheets in his first five Premier League games but United fans suffered a massive dose of reality with the three strikes they conceded yesterday.
As Ferdinand hinted at, all has not been perfect and many were suspicious of the keeper’s positioning for FC Twente’s equaliser last week, but there is no doubt that he has certainly turned a corner and is definitely not one of United’s biggest problems anymore.
Onana will next be in action for the Red Devils when they travel to Portugal to take on FC Porto in what already seems a vital Europa League tie after the disappointing draw on opening night.
