The NFL dates back to 1920, when the American Professional Football Association made its debut. Two years later it was renamed the National Football League. However, the league as we know it was not created until 1996, when the NFL merged with the American Football League.

Most NFL games are played on Sundays, however games are also scheduled on Thursdays, Mondays and sometimes on Saturdays. Fans attending games often partake in the great American past time of tailgating — essentially a pre-party in the parking lot at stadium where fans eat and drink before the game. Each team has its own particular traditions before, during and after games, but a passion for football and friendly rivalries is the underlining theme.
