Brian Daboll & Co. had a tough job coming into Thursday Night Football. A short week against a divisional rival who has been nearly impossible to beat during the Prescott era. While Daboll did not call a great game (consisting of a lot of poor second-down run calls and quarterback rollouts), the offense still had opportunities to score.
The Giants were a couple of caught balls or better-placed throws away from winning this football game and that is not on Daboll. The biggest takeaway is that the third-down play-calling needs to get better as completing less than a third of your attempts (and also scoring no touchdowns) is unacceptable.
On the defensive side of the ball, Shane Bowen was faced with an uphill battle having two starting cornerbacks out coming into the game. Prescott and the Cowboys evidently knew this as they took full advantage of the inexperience in the Giants’ secondary.
To try to counteract this, it may have been beneficial for the Giants to call up some more blitzes forcing quicker throws but either way Prescott was getting the ball out of his hand on most plays in rapid fashion.
Bowen will have another difficult test next week against a dangerous Seahawks receiving core. But this time he will have more time to prepare and potentially a healthier defense.
