Treviso (Italy) played host to the adidas Eurocamp last week, where some of the world’s most promising basketball talents converged at Pallacanestro Treviso’s Palaverde gym. In attendance was five-star guard Darryn Peterson, who plays on the adidas 3SSB circuit with Phenom United in Ohio and signed an NIL deal with adidas Basketball last year.

Currently ranked as the third-best high school player in the Class of 2025, Peterson has pro scouts already comparing him to Devin Booker. The 6-foot-5 guard sat down with HoopsHype to discuss his mental preparation, film he watches, his playing style, influences, recruitment and more.

Darryn Peterson: We’ve just been practicing and scrimmaging each other and then just playing games. So far it’s been fun, just being out here, in a new country, being around people I’m usually not around and then learning from people that are in the NBA and played overseas.

DP: I’d say Devin Booker, Bradley Beal, Kevin Durant, Michael Jordan.

DP: I feel like I can score all three levels too, guard my position, put the ball straight in the well.

DP: I played point guard position. I’ve been playing shooting guard for a while, but I brought the ball down a lot and facilitated a lot, so I was trying to show that I can play a point guard position.

DP: Yessir. Some of my coaches were telling me, I was playing point guard but don’t get super passive still, make plays for myself and others.

DP: Dog, both hands. Leader, willing to do anything to win.

DP: Not much. My coach told me he came out here with Zion Williamson before, but that was all I knew, and I knew some of the guys that came last year. A ton of big names have come here.

DP: Definitely show that my spot, I earned it, and nobody can compete with me. Just to showcase my talents, show that I’ve been working all year, and off season. I

DP: Mainly just that point guard position; I’ve been labeled as a shooting guard for a while.

DP: Weight room, I say weight room, and then getting in shape because people are face guarding me and chasing me around, so being able to stay in shape and still get under my shot.

DP: I hear playing without fouling, I say playing without fouling, and then I say guarding somebody off the ball better. I think I’m a better on-ball defender than off-ball, so guarding off-ball.

DP: The mini-camp was the hardest part for me; everybody was trying to make the team, so everybody was competing and going super hard. Just playing against people I’ve never played against and playing with different refs, like how we do out here.

DP: My confidence is the same, and I feel like I’m the best player ever.

DP: I think it’s one of their strengths, and I say the refs are way different. They’re blowing it a lot more down here. I feel like this game should take us to the refs.

DP: Just recently re-opened my recruitment, just some college coaches changed, but same people reached out, just a couple new schools.

DP: Playstyle, I say. Let me come in and play my game. Let me play a point guard position, which I’m trying to transition to.

DP: July, next month, South Carolina, trying to win that. Then undecided the rest, I’m going to be working, working out with some guys, pro guys.

DP: I’m pretty self-motivated, I’d say. My parents are trying to work for them, but I don’t want them to work. I’m just trying to be the best, and I always try to find the stuff I’m weak at and work on it. Today, I had some small turnovers, so I’m going to watch that film and see what I could have done. I just want to be better every day.

DP: Music, music, I ‘d say music. Just some guys, I relate to what they’re saying in some songs, so music is my biggest thing.

DP: Any song by Drake. For sure, yeah.

DP: My GOAT, Mike, I’d say Michael Jordan, and then my top five all-time; Mike, Kobe Bryant, give me LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Shaquille O’Neal.

DP: Luka Doncic, as my one. I want my two, Devin Booker, LeBron, down there then, Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic. They are unstoppable, yeah, they’re unstoppable right there. One thing I think separates you and makes you different is your mid-range game. Some guys are kind of three and just hard drives.

DP: Sure. There are a lotta guys who will tell you that’s not the greatest style, but if you’re really good at it, that’s just always going to be your game, right?

DP: The reads, some of the reads. I like to watch live too, see their reactions when they miss. Usually sometimes when I miss I get down on myself but I watch those guys, they miss and it’s like they made it, they have no reaction so I’m trying to get better at that, stuff like that.
